Amsterdam stopped running on the windows long ago, and this is where it happens now
On this subject Amsterdam has a reputation from forty years ago and a reality from last month. Windows have disappeared in their hundreds, the number of licences has been falling for two decades, and the city now talks openly about an erotic centre somewhere outside the middle of town. What followed is not a smaller market but a different one: private, by appointment, arranged by message, in hotels and apartments.
In almost every respect that is better for you. More choice, more quiet, no queue of tourists behind your back. In one respect it is worse, and it is the one that counts: at a window you saw who it was before you decided anything. On a phone you only see what somebody chose to send you.
What legalisation solves, and what it does not
Since 2000 the Netherlands has treated sex work as a profession: a licence for the premises, a chamber of commerce registration, tax like any other self-employed person. That regulates buildings and people rather well. It does not regulate advertising at all. Online, nothing whatsoever stands between a registered Amsterdam independent and a gallery cut together from three countries, and that gap is where almost every story that goes wrong begins.
Checking her is not your job

It is not a health certificate and it does not make an evening good, that part stays yours. It removes the mistake almost every bad story starts with: that the woman at the door was never the woman in the photographs.
